Day 337 – 343

Iquitos is a the largest city in the world that is not accessible by the road, but only by the river or the air. The city and it’s surrounding have approximately 450.000 people!

So even in the middle of the Amazon, you can find everything you want: restaurants, luxury hotels, cinemas, casinos, … A lot of casino actually. The city itself just look like any South American city.

But the special thing from Iquitos is the neighborhood of Belém. This is the poorest area of Iquitos. It is basically a neighborhood on the river.

In dry season, you can walk there. But in the rainy season, everything is flooded. Some house are build raised, and some others are floatable.

The market there is one special market. You find the basics stuff such as clothes, vegetables, meet, fishes. But, you can also find turtles for example (to eat of course).

I stay in town for 3 days.

Ayahuasca Ceremony

Iquitos is known as the capital of Ayahuasca. Ayahuasca is a psychedelic medecine/drug used by communities of the jungle. This beverage, accompanied with a diet before, is suppose to heal your body and your spirit and to give you vision of the future, the past, … Everybody react differently so it is hard to put words on it.

It is a natural beverage coming from a root of the jungle. I decided to try out the experience.

I found a nice shaman. Together we go in the jungle in a remote area in a lodge to do the Ayahuasca ceremony.

During this ceremony, the shaman will sing and do music for around 3-4 hours, approximately the effect of the drink. After this time, you still feel the effect but you are more lucid.

I chose to do this ceremony to also have answer or to see more clear about what I want to do in my future, in my travel or after.

This was a very interesting experience for me. I felt in a state of awake/asleep. I got some “visions” or hallucinations, but it is hard to tell if it was coming from the drink or because I was dreaming since I was half asleep.
But most importantly, I was relaxed, listening to the shaman’s music and trying to give myself to the medecine.

Different from what I expected, especially on the visions which I think I didn’t really had. But this experience was for me very intriguing.

I didn’t get “answer” as I may have expected. But maybe the medecine helped my subconscious and my body, and I cannot really notice it. I will know more about it is the next weeks.

Leaving Iquitos

After about a week in total, I decide to leave Iquitos to go to the mainland of Peru and visiting the country. Again, I will take a boat.

This time it is a very different kind of boat (much bigger), which mean a different experience !
